Whitehall Court

WHITEHALL COURT Whitehall Court was built in 1925 by I.W. Schlesinger Ð a New York business entrepreneur Ð as his own palatial villa, which he named The Ritz. Designed in the Italianate style, the building had a grand carriage entrance leading to a private courtyard garden. Johannesburg architect John Abraham Moffat was instructed to emulate the highest standards of modern American living, including an electric list, centralised laundry and even a basement-level bakery. Schlesinger established the Killarney Film Studio and produced the pioneering African Mirror newsreels. He dominated the South African theatre and film scene until his death in 1949. Whitehall now offers elegant apartment living, affording residents the grace and style of a bygone era.
