HIGH COURT BUILDING The high Court Building derives its name from the High Court that was originally situated on Gandhi Square. The building housed lawyers and advocates, and in the 1940s writer Herman Charles Bosman had an office on the second floor. Designed in 1904 by McIntosh & Moffat in an Edwardian Style, with pedimented corner gables, it was extended by two floors and redesigned in 1932 by JC Cook & Cowan to its current Art Deco appearance. The building was restored in 2018 by Olitzki Property Holdings.

A culmination of research gathered over many years, the Online Johannesburg Heritage Register is being launched on Nelson Mandela Day 18 July 2025.

Among the many heritage sites featured is Chancellor House, the downtown offices of Mandela and Tambo Attorneys in the 1950s. After having been vacant and shuttered for more than a decade, this iconic building is being revived and brought to life once again as offices for the Community Development Department, which oversees the City’s Arts, Culture & Heritage Services.
