Friedenheim Gates

FRIEDENHEIM GATES Declared a National Monument in 1986, these magnificent gates of Sir Julius JeppeÕs Victorian mansion, Friedenheim, are virtually all that remain of the original house designed by architects Carter & McIntosh and built by John Moffat in 1896. The gates were manufactured by Macfarlane & Co of Glasgow. Sir Abe Bailey was the second owner. He sold it to the Transvaal Education Department for use as a hostel in 1915. Generations of Tsessebe House boarders passed through these hallowed white pillars. The house was condemned and demolished by the Education Department in 1963.
