GERARD SEKOTO A great South African artist, Gerard Sekoto pioneered social realism, depicting township life while imbuing people with dignity. He lived in this Kilptown house from 1940 to 1942, moving then to District Six in Cape Town. In 1947 he left South Africa for Paris where he endured much hardship before his work was recognised. He died in Paris, but his paintings have been displayed in major art galleries in South Africa and around the world.
