The ChiefÕs House, Meadowlands

CHIEFÕS HOUSE, MEADOWLANDS Known as ÒEmakhosiniÓ, the ChiefÕs House was built in the late 1950Õs to accommodate homeland chiefs on their visits to the urban areas. Such leaders as Kaiser Matanzima, Mangosuthu Buthelezi and Patrick Mphephu stayed here. The apartheid government granted sham independence to rural ethnic homelands, popularly called Bantustans, as a way of denying political rights to Africans in South Africa, and opening the way for massed forced removals. The Meadowlands Tourism Development Centre has been based here since 2008.
