TROYEVILLE HOUSE Built in 1902 for K.B. de Kok, this sumptuous twin-gabled stone house occupies a commanding position on the rising ridge and itself enjoys a fine view. By 1904 its grandeur and importance were enhanced by the new owner, U.S. Barrett, Master of the High Court. The Salvation Army bought it in 1926 and for sixty years it was the training school for their cadets. Separate accommodation was built for the men. The social columnist Gwen Gill made it her home. Jennifer Ferguson, singer, songwriter and activist was the last private owner.

A culmination of research gathered over many years, the Online Johannesburg Heritage Register is being launched on Nelson Mandela Day 18 July 2025.

Among the many heritage sites featured is Chancellor House, the downtown offices of Mandela and Tambo Attorneys in the 1950s. After having been vacant and shuttered for more than a decade, this iconic building is being revived and brought to life once again as offices for the Community Development Department, which oversees the City’s Arts, Culture & Heritage Services.
