Queen of the Beat Competition Rules

INTRODUCTION

Queen of the Beat will be an all-female DJ competition that will be open to Joburg based female DJs. This initiative will create a platform to discover new and fresh talent. The programme will have a competitive edge and all finalists will get an opportunity take part. The aim of the workshop is to provide opportunities for self-determined, visible and thriving women in the music industry. A safe space for up-and-coming female DJs to learn, engage & exchange, spanning over a variety of topics in the entertainment industry  (the Competition”).

In order for a participant to submit an 8 minute max video (“Video”), each participant shall need to register on the competition webisite and follow the below steps

Step 1: Register online with your email address and details at https://arts-culture-heritage.joburg/events/queen-of-the-beat/

Step 2: Check your email for confirmation of receipt and confirm all information supplied is correct

Step 3: Upload the Video or a link to the Video

Pundit on behalf of the City of Johannesburg hereby records should a participants Video and/or link thereto not be accessible for any reason whatsoever, Pundit and/or COJ shall not be liable in any manner whatsoever, and the participants waives any right in law or otherwise ot claim against Pundit or the COJ.

Competition winners shall be determined solely by the judges decisions over three phases, (1) Live Auditions (2) Qualifiers selection and (3) the Final.

Pre- selection: Video submission

  • Each participant to record and share their Video
  • Each Video to include atleast 3-tracks.
  • All online registrations must include the complete online registration form
  • Videos to include an introduction, with the DJ providing details of where they reside, their full name, surname and age (also include DJ name if available)
  • The uploading of the Video’s shall be from 16 May 2022 up to and including 9 June 2022 (the “Closing Date”).
  • Videos uploaded or submitted after the Closing Date shall be disqualified and not considered.

 

JUDGING CRITERIA FOR THE LIVE AUDITIONS & QUALIFIER

Judges shall judge each participant and select at their sole discretion the participants who shall participate at the the live auditions to be held on either the 11 June 2022 or 12 June 2022 at Cosmo Mall, Newtown Junction or Maponya Mall

The selected 20 participants shall be confirmed and notified of their selection.

The Top 20 DJs selected from the Live Auditions will participate at the Qualifier to be hosted at the Box Shop Lifestyle 07166 Vilakazi Street, Orlandso West, Soweto 1804. The criteria judges may apply may include, but shall not be limited to::

  • Track selection: selecting the right tracks that work in your set
  • Technical skills: i.e. mixing: seamless flow and pace of your mix including timing and transitions
  • Style, Presence and Overal creativity: How the DJ combines skills with music
  • Originality

Should a participant not hear from a representative of Pundit no later than 13 June 2022 such participant’s live audition will be considered unsuccessful and the participant will not be part of the 20 selected participants to proceed to the Qualifier.

At the Live Auditions and Qualifiers the judges shall apply the above-mentioned criteria, and may consider any other relevant factors in order to score and select the required participants to advance to the next stage.

Top 20 participants will be informed by Pundit no later than 19 June 2022 if they will proceed to the Queen of the Beat Final hosted on 25 June 2022.

 

THE WORKSHOP 

A workshop shall be held and it shall be open to all 20 successful participants.

The workshop will be hosted on the 18 June 2022 at the South African Hip Hop Museum: 121 Lilian Ngoyi Street, Newtown, Johannesburg

 

JUDGING CRITERIA FOR THE FINAL

  • The six finalists shall take part in a head to head contest, to determine the ultimate winner of the competition (the “Finals”).
  • The Final shall be held at 193 Rosettenville Road, James Hall Museum on the 25 June 2022.
  • Each participant will be afforded 8 minutes to perform a set of their choice (the “DJ Set”
  • During the 1st stage each DJ Set must include a minimum of 5 tracks.

Judges shall judge each DJ Set on a score out of 10 based on the following criteria:

  • Track selection: selecting the right tracks that work in your set
  • Technical skills: i.e. mixing: seamless flow and pace of your mix including timing and transitions
  • Style, Presence and Overall creativity: How the DJ combines skills with music
  • Originality
  • Crowd Response

FINAL 25 JUNE 2022

Head to head tournament style format; 2 partcipants competing against each other.

Round 1

Deejays 1 & 2 will battle each other. (the selection will be determined on points score based, inte alia, on the criteria used at the auditions and qualifier, including crowd response) They each have 8mins each to wow the judges and crowd.

Round 2

DJ 3 and 4 to battle (the selection will be determined on points score based, inte alia, on the criteria used at the first audition and qualfier including crowd response) They have 8 mins each to wow the judges and crowd.

Round 3

DJ 5 and 6 to battle (the selection will be determined on points score based, inte alia, on the criteria used at the first audition and qualifier including crowd response) They have 8 mins each to wow the judges and crowd.

Final Round

3 finalists will go head to head as we crown the Ultimate Queen of the Beat winner

10 mins each (the selection will be determined on points score based, inter alia, on the criteria used at the first audition and qualifier including crowd response).

RULES FOR THE COMPETITION

  • Pundit shall provide CDJs (equipment)to the participants for their DJ Set during live auditions, qualifiers and the Final.
  • During their DJ Set if a participant is interrupted due to equipment failure, or any other cause beyond the control of the participant, such participant shall be permitted to restart their performance allocated at 8 minutes.  
  • If the interuption is caused by the participant, or in the opinion of the judges the interuption is attributable to the participant, their equipment used in the DJ Set , the participant shall not be permitted to restart their set and subject to the time remaining, shall have to continue from where the interuption ceases..
  • Judges scoring and decision is final and binding with respect to the DJ Set and no participant shall be permitted to object or request a further opportunity for any reason whatsoever
  • Judges reserve the right to disqualify any individual who is believed to be cheating in any way
  • All DJs Selected will be posted on our web page and our social media platforms

 

PRIZES

In addition to this amazing opportunity, winning DJs will take home great prizes that will assist them in their DJ Career.

Prizes are only awarded to 1st Place, 2nd Place and 3rd Place

Prizes are non-transferable, prizes may not be exchanged for cash

 

GENERAL RULES

  • The Promoter of the Competition are Pundit Trading (Pty) Ltd on behalf of the City of Johannesburg.
  • The Promoter or the CoJ shall have the right to terminate the Competition immediately and without notice for any reason beyond its control. In the event of such termination, all participants agree to waive any rights that they may have in terms of this promotion and acknowledge that they will have no recourse against the Promoters, its agents and staff, the judges or the COJ.
  • Participation in the competition constitutes acceptance of the competition rules and entrants agree to abide by the rules.
  • Except in so far as is provided for in the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008, the judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
  • The Promoter, and/or the COJ may collect and use your personal data in order to enable your participation in this competition and for related online activities. Your personal data may be used by the promoter and/or the COJ for marketing purposes and, by participating in the Competition, you consent to the transfer, storage and processing of the data in South Africa, consent of which may be withdrawn at any time by written notification to the Promoters. We keep your personal data to fulfil the purposes for which it was collected, or as required by applicable laws or regulations. We will not use your personal data for a different purpose without first obtaining your permission. We do not allow third parties to use your personal information.
  • By entering the competition, you grant the Promoters the right, except where prohibited by law, to use your name for competition purposes in promoting or publicising the competition, including right to name the winners of the prizes in public and/or any social media forum. The Promoter pr COJ, however, does not have any obligation to use the winning entries for any purpose. The Promoter or COJ reserve the right to request that any images taken of the participants and/or winners be used for marketing purposes in any manner they deem fit, without any further remuneration being made payable to the winners. All entries become the property of the Promoter on behalf of the COJ. By entering this competition, the Promoter reserve the right to communicate with participant/s at any time during or after the Competition and such party may opt out from receiving such communication at any time.
  • All participants/entrants indemnify the Promoter, its advertising agencies, advisers, suppliers, and nominated agents, COJ and/or judges against any and all claims, damages or losses resulting from their participation, or lack thereof, in this Competition arising from negligent acts or omissions of the Promoters.
  • The Promoter assume no responsibility for any error, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, delay in operation or transmission, communications line failure, theft or destruction or unauthorised access to, or alteration of entries. The Promoter is not responsible for any problems or technical malfunction of any personal equipment, telephone network or telephone lines, computer online systems, servers, or providers, computer equipment, software, failure of any e-mail or entry to be received by Promoter on account of technical problems, human error or traffic congestion on the internet or at any web site, or any combination thereof, including any injury or damage to the participant or any other person’s personal equipment relating to or resulting from participation in this Competition or uploading/downloading any materials in this Competition
