The Dr A.B. Xuma house is one of the three surviving historic buildings of the 1955 forced removals, it was the home of respected black intellectual Dr Alfred Bathini Xuma who was the first black medical doctor in South Africa and early ANC president, as well as his wife Madie Hall Xuma who was a social worker and first ANC women’s league president. The City recently acquired and restored this important building, and is hoping to revive this space by hosting a jazz concert harkening back to the heyday of Sophiatown & a photographic exhibition of the life & times of trailblazing Henry Nxumalo, a journalist & editor of Drum magazine in the 1950’s.
