YWCA On meeting members of influential Zenzele Clubs, an African-American resident of Dube Village, Madie Hall Xuma facilitated the affiliation of YWCA-SA to a non-racial World YWCA in 1995. Together with the first Transvaal Secretary Phyllis Mzaidume, her successor Ellen Kuzwayo and many other distinguished women, the leadership and collective power of women and girls was developed. In 1985 this building was erected on the site of the original by the Anglo American and De Beers ChairmanÕs Fund.

A culmination of research gathered over many years, the Online Johannesburg Heritage Register is being launched on Nelson Mandela Day 18 July 2025.

Among the many heritage sites featured is Chancellor House, the downtown offices of Mandela and Tambo Attorneys in the 1950s. After having been vacant and shuttered for more than a decade, this iconic building is being revived and brought to life once again as offices for the Community Development Department, which oversees the City’s Arts, Culture & Heritage Services.
