THE MUNRO DRIVE Completed in 1919, The Munro Drive opened up Lower Houghton for development. Named after John Munro, a director of the Johannesburg Consolidated Investment Company, developer of Houghton Estate, it traverses a steep 900m with a hairpin bend and an impressive retaining wall. The original wall collapsed in 1938, and was rebuilt with dressed stone and an iron railing decorated with the CityÕs then coat of arms. Its views over the northern suburbs and beyond have made it a much-loved landmark in the City.

A culmination of research gathered over many years, the Online Johannesburg Heritage Register is being launched on Nelson Mandela Day 18 July 2025.

Among the many heritage sites featured is Chancellor House, the downtown offices of Mandela and Tambo Attorneys in the 1950s. After having been vacant and shuttered for more than a decade, this iconic building is being revived and brought to life once again as offices for the Community Development Department, which oversees the City’s Arts, Culture & Heritage Services.
