GUILD COTTAGE Guild Cottage was established in 1907 by the Johannesburg Branch of the Guild of Loyal Women to provide shelter for destitute and neglected girls and boys. The Braamfontein Company provided the land on the western edge of Parktown and the building was designed by J Hicks. By 1911 the need had grown and architects H Baker and Fleming designed the extension to accommodate a further 12 children. Guild Cottage has operated continuously since its founding and still provides care for vulnerable children up to adulthood.

A culmination of research gathered over many years, the Online Johannesburg Heritage Register is being launched on Nelson Mandela Day 18 July 2025.

Among the many heritage sites featured is Chancellor House, the downtown offices of Mandela and Tambo Attorneys in the 1950s. After having been vacant and shuttered for more than a decade, this iconic building is being revived and brought to life once again as offices for the Community Development Department, which oversees the City’s Arts, Culture & Heritage Services.
