EYETHU CINEMA Ephraim Batana and Caroline Kinini Tshabalala (nŽe Ngcobo) were renowned entrepreneurs and prominent community leaders. From the 1940Õs, they built thriving retail and service businesses, enriching the local economy. In 1969, they established Eyethu Cinema, a modernist, state-of-the art two-tier venue with 1,400 seats, which became a cultural hub for films, performing arts, and community events. After closing in the 1990s, the cinemaÕs legacy was revived in 2025 with Eyethu Heritage Hall.

A culmination of research gathered over many years, the Online Johannesburg Heritage Register is being launched on Nelson Mandela Day 18 July 2025.

Among the many heritage sites featured is Chancellor House, the downtown offices of Mandela and Tambo Attorneys in the 1950s. After having been vacant and shuttered for more than a decade, this iconic building is being revived and brought to life once again as offices for the Community Development Department, which oversees the City’s Arts, Culture & Heritage Services.
