BEYERS NAUDE HOUSE For over 20 years, from 1977-2000, this was the home of anti-apartheid clergyman Beyers NaudŽ and wife Ilsa. While in Greenside, he suffered banning, house arrest and harassment from the apartheid state. From here the ageing ÒOom BeyÓ moved to Northcliff, becoming a congregant at the Aasvo‘lkop N G Kerk, where he had condemned apartheid from the pulpit in 1963. A rebel Afrikaner, he is admired for his transformation from Broederbond-dominee to anti-apartheid hero.

A culmination of research gathered over many years, the Online Johannesburg Heritage Register is being launched on Nelson Mandela Day 18 July 2025.

Among the many heritage sites featured is Chancellor House, the downtown offices of Mandela and Tambo Attorneys in the 1950s. After having been vacant and shuttered for more than a decade, this iconic building is being revived and brought to life once again as offices for the Community Development Department, which oversees the City’s Arts, Culture & Heritage Services.
