BERYL COURT Built in 1937 for the Standard Investment Corporation, Beryl Court is a very fine example of Art Deco, contrasting simple materials and making dramatic use of the slope to create a striking form. Standing proudly on the high ground, it is entered on the diagonal into the octagonal lift and stair tower. The receding roof line is beautifully detailed. Designed by Durban architects H.B. Hobbs and F.P. Bonieux, the west faade hints at seaside accommodation with the stairs giving direct access to each flat at ground floor.

A culmination of research gathered over many years, the Online Johannesburg Heritage Register is being launched on Nelson Mandela Day 18 July 2025.

Among the many heritage sites featured is Chancellor House, the downtown offices of Mandela and Tambo Attorneys in the 1950s. After having been vacant and shuttered for more than a decade, this iconic building is being revived and brought to life once again as offices for the Community Development Department, which oversees the City’s Arts, Culture & Heritage Services.
