Robert Sobukwe House

ROBERT MANGALISO SOBUKWE 1924 - 1978 Appointed a language instructor at Wits University, in 1954 Robert Sobukwe moved to this house with his wife Veronica. A convinced Africanist, Sobukwe broke with the ANC in 1959 and formed the Pan Africanist Congress, elected its first president. The PAC campaign against the Pass laws led to the massacre at Sharpeville and Sobukwe was sentenced to 3 years hard labour. A special clause introduced in Parliament allowed him to be held indefinitely. Held in solitary confinement on Robben Island for a further 6 years, on release he was restricted to Galeshewe in Kimberley where he died, but was buried in his birthplace, Graaff Reinet. There is only one race, the human race.
