FRANS HOENIG HAUS This is one of the first residential buildings to be completed for the dynamite factory Ð the largest in the world Ð which opened in 1896. Set in extensive grounds, the house was built using materials imported from Germany, and the roof is Germanic in character. It was the home of the first Factory Manager, Franz Hoenig, and housed seven successive Factory Managers from 1897 to 1949. The house was restored by AECI in 1971.

A culmination of research gathered over many years, the Online Johannesburg Heritage Register is being launched on Nelson Mandela Day 18 July 2025.

Among the many heritage sites featured is Chancellor House, the downtown offices of Mandela and Tambo Attorneys in the 1950s. After having been vacant and shuttered for more than a decade, this iconic building is being revived and brought to life once again as offices for the Community Development Department, which oversees the City’s Arts, Culture & Heritage Services.
