Built as a memorial to men who died in World War 1 (1914 Ð 1918), the facility opened in 1923 as the first childrenÕs hospital on the sub-continent. Funds were raised by the National Council of Women, and the municipality donated the land. The Memorial Hall is at the heart of the building designed by architects Cowin, Powers & Ellis. For more than 50 years, this was a home of academic paediatric training. Now operated as the ChildrenÕs Memorial Institute (CMI), housing a variety of organisations, it remains true to the original purpose of service to children.

A culmination of research gathered over many years, the Online Johannesburg Heritage Register is being launched on Nelson Mandela Day 18 July 2025.

Among the many heritage sites featured is Chancellor House, the downtown offices of Mandela and Tambo Attorneys in the 1950s. After having been vacant and shuttered for more than a decade, this iconic building is being revived and brought to life once again as offices for the Community Development Department, which oversees the City’s Arts, Culture & Heritage Services.
