The City of Johannesburg was responsible for an exhibition entitled Artists of Africa that was hosted during the tournament. This Pan African exhibition was recognized as a City of Johannesburg Host City Event and funded by the National Lottery Fund, Telkom and The City of Johannesburg.
Artists from all over Africa were invited to create artworks for what became one of the most extensively marketed arts events hosted in South Africa during the tournament.
The City of Johannesburg was interested in acquiring the bronze as a permanent, very visible reminder of South Africa’s successful hosting of the tournament for permanent placement at the FNB Stadium.

A culmination of research gathered over many years, the Online Johannesburg Heritage Register is being launched on Nelson Mandela Day 18 July 2025.
Among the many heritage sites featured is Chancellor House, the downtown offices of Mandela and Tambo Attorneys in the 1950s. After having been vacant and shuttered for more than a decade, this iconic building is being revived and brought to life once again as offices for the Community Development Department, which oversees the City’s Arts, Culture & Heritage Services.
