An important element of the 2010 Ernest Oppenheimer Park upgrade was the implementation of a series of sculptures that draw their inspiration from the history and contemporary culture of the city of Johannesburg.
Artist Stone Mabunda and the Trinity Session in collaboration with The Library, created the Rissik Street Post Office sculpture that is both playful and serious, commemorating both Johannesburg’s early beginnings and celebrating its urban regeneration.
A two metre high wood carving of the Standard Theatre building that used to stand on this site before it was demolished in 1949. The sculpture is placed on a concrete plinth with a metal frame at the back.
