Commuter Sculpture

Large mild steel sculpture of a female figure located within close proximity to a major taxi rank (Baragwanath Taxi Rank) depicts a walking woman approximately 4 metres high, containing various shaped elements including signage of locations around Johannesburg and Soweto, small steel cut-outs of walking, pushing prams, on bikes, etc.

The Commuter represents a walking woman, striding across a pavement. She is made up of numerous smaller figures of commuters who use the taxi rank every day, drawn and photographed on site. They represent commuters who hurry to catch their transport, burdened with shopping or school bags, or the tools needed for a day's work. The complexity of a transient commuter community is expressed through the variety and quantity of the parts.

The Commuter is a tribute to the unnamed workers of Johannesburg and is a conscious reminder of the people who live their lives unrecorded, other than in the archives of family and friends.
